Working on rainwater harvesting in Kenya makes one fact hard to ignore: water is not just something that appears when you turn a handle. Somebody has to collect it, carry it, store it, protect it, and make every gallon do a useful job. Back home, that same water is easy to take for granted because the work is hidden behind the wall.
The project also reinforced my respect for simple systems. Gutters, first-flush controls, gravity, and well-placed storage can do dependable work without a computer trying to supervise every drop. Complexity has its place, but every extra valve, pump, sensor, and connection is another part that needs power, maintenance, and eventually repair.
That does not mean every American house needs a row of rain tanks. It means we should fix leaks promptly, match the system to the actual need, and stop treating clean water as an unlimited disposal method. A passive solution that a homeowner can understand and maintain often beats a clever one nobody knows how to service.
